AFTER overcoming initial nerves, Denholme's Rebekah Tiler delivered for Team England in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

The 16-year-old Bingley Grammar School pupil was dominant in the end in the women's 69kg category in the capital of Apia, taking gold with an overall weight of 211kg.

British champion Rebekah, who was England's flag-bearer in the opening ceremony, returned 89kg in the snatch and 122kg in the clean and jerk.

However, she admitted: "I was a bit nervous until I lifted and opened with 89kg but then I missed two attempts at 93kg.

"Ed (coach Halstead) says I was too slow. In the clean and jerks, I started with 115kg, then 119kg and finished with 122kg.

"All three felt good and I got a 211kg total. Thanks for everyone's support."

British Weight Lifting's chief executive officer Ashley Metcalfe said: “After her exceptional showing at the European Youth Championships last month, we’re delighted to see Rebekah continue her success with another gold medal.

"This latest achievement reiterates the progress she has made over the last year and leaves her preparation ideally placed ahead of the World Championships in November.”

Team England won six medals in the weightlifting and were third overall in the medals table with 44 (12 gold, 16 silver, 16 bronze) behind Australia and South Africa in the fifth instalment of the Games.

More than 900 athletes from 63 nations took part in championships, which were restricted to competitors aged from 13 to 17, across the nine sports.
