TOP Cross Hills pair Phillip Dowgill and Andy Tate made it third time lucky in the Hillcrest Floodlit Pairs when they won the event with a 21-15 victory over Chris Barton and Owen Doyle of Merseyside.

It followed two final defeats in recent years.

Tate and David Scott, also of Cross Hills, reached the last eight of the Yorkshire Handicap at Thornhill C&BC before being beaten.

The Skipton and Worth Valley Junior team ended their season with defeat by Leeds B but put up another brave effort with wins by Thomas Johnson and Oliver Burnett. Let us hope they can regroup for next year.

The Hebden Bridge four-person team reaches the final stages at Lund Park tomorrow.

Cross Roads play in the Yorkshire Parks Victory Cup on Sunday and face a very difficult game against Pudsey BC, the Bradford champions at Rawdon Park.

Silsden Ladies feature in the Yorkshire ABA’s Ladies Top Team event on Sunday (10am), where six teams play in group stages at Heckmondwike to decide the two finalists to represent the county next year in the finals.

The Keighley BC Invitation Pairs was played at Royd Ings in wet weather and almost saw a slight upset as top local pair Keith Coppen and Len Buxton trailed Tony Leach and John Wood of Glen 19-15 before somehow salvaging victory. Semi-finalists were holders Derek Seed and Arthur Bruce, plus David Haldenby and Mick Sutcliffe.

Broughton Road was the setting of the Worth Valley League Cup finals on a fine day and on a good green.

In the Third Division Chairman’s Cup, Lund B met Glen B in a close match where the winners were shared, with Lund just coming out on top despite conceding a 14 start. They won by four points after good wins by Hazel Cartwright and Bill Duckworth.

Steeton A proved too good for Silsden PF in the League Two Final, having seven out of eight winners with a sensational bowling effort by Maurice Haley to get them on the way, supported by Keith Coppen and Liz Bland.

Silsden PF were in complete disarray and their 16-point start soon disappeared despite one winner in Sheila Cunningham as the Supplementary Cup headed to Steeton Top.

The First Division’s Valley Cup was fought out by Cross Roads, who were going for a five-timer, and Denholme A, who had ten start.

They soon extended this with great wins by Andrew Peel and Pauline Lightowler. Despite big wins by Richard Hargreaves and Peter Walsh, Denholme hung on to win by three points.

All the prizes were presented by Yorkshire ABA president Roy Sanderson.
