A BIG crowd witnessed the final event of the Worth Valley season, the Veterans League Cup finals at Lund Park.

Despite good victories by Dennis Radcliffe and David Wynne-Jones, Glen B were narrow winners over Sutton C in the Fourth Division final for the Capstick Shield. This was Glen’s second victory in this event.

Whinfield B picked up the John Holmes Trophy just ahead of Gargrave B ensuring the Third Division trophy went back to Skipton for the second time for the club.

Steeton A scored a four-point victory in the Second Division final to claim a cup and league double against promoted rivals Colne Legion B and win the Edna Thornton Shield.

The best game was reserved for last as an out-of-sorts Keighley A just prevented a Whinfield double by defeating their A team by a single point after the first two scores left the match level.

Trevor Hargreaves and Brian Greenwood beat Idris Wade and Frank Greenwood 25-24, in a match that hung in the balance right to the last wood, to win the Burgess Shield.

Hargreaves was in action four days later at Lund Park when Cross Roads B beat their own A team in the Hebden Floodlit Four Man team event.

Both sides had disposed of Hebden teams in the semis and a close game was envisaged. But the likelihood of that happening was cut short after Richard Hargreaves won 21-4 to almost put the game to bed. Trevor Hargreaves and Peter Walsh added to their opponents' woes.

Phil Anderson was the only loser and came off before his game was over in the cold and damp conditions. The A team comprised Peter Clark, Scott Bairstow, Alan Thornber and Mark Barker.

Richard then teamed up with brother Neil to win the Old Town Floodlit Pairs in tremendous style the following night.

Each pairing received a three-point start, but with scores of 21-3, 21-7 and 21-4, the brothers won three games and had only five points scored against them overall. Neil was the Hebden Royd Champion of Champions despite my report of a few weeks ago claiming it was Richard. Apologies.

Meanwhile Cross Roads, albeit with a weakened team, lost by more than 30 points to Pudsey A in the first game in the Yorkshire Parks Victory Cup at Rawdon. The only three winners for Cross Roads were Peter Clark, David Kirkbright and Richard Hargreaves, who demolished a former Yorkshire Champion and Waterloo winner 21-6 before putting his woods away until next spring.
