SILSDEN'S Dougie Lampkin had to settle for third place in the Scott Trial, which was won by Ian Austermuhle.

The Malton competitor rode his Beta UK machine in his usual effortless style to finish on 42 penalties and beat Winslow's Alex Wigg by four, ending 19 years of a victory quest in the 100-year-old Yorkshire Dales event.

Former winner Lampkin was on track to put his new Vertigo machine at the top of the results but a minor electrical component on his prototype machine slowed the rider in his progress round the all-moorland 80-mile in the Swaledale hills.

Lampkin was in another class through the 76 observed sections dropping just 25 penalties to win the Frank Fletcher Trophy for the best performance on observation only. The time penalties added another 24 marks to his final score of 49.

Just seven penalties covered the first three finishers in the Richmond Motor Club event.

2011 winner Jonathan Richardson set the fastest time of 4:42:22 after Skipton builder John Sunter set the pace until the last five miles when his Honda machine sustained a puncture. Only four penalties separated Richardson, Richard Sadler and Ross Danby.

Denby Dale teenager Jack Price topped the awards list for the coveted Silver Spoons.

Bradford DMC opted for Howden Wood high above Silsden as the venue for the final club championship trial of the season.

Jason Dunning stepped in as clerk of course and then competed, and was beaten on the Clubman route by his daughter Beth. The Crossflatts teenager was more than happy. Trawden's Thomas Rushton rode the entire main course without penalty to beat Guiseley musician Sam Jennings and Andy Holker, while Keighley teenager Jacob Snowdon won the Youth class. Shaun Hazelwood and Simon Armstrong rode the 50/50 and Esay routes with a loss of one mark.
