HAVING just missed out on breaking Michaela Breeze's nine-year-old record for the snatch at the European Junior Championships in Lithuania, Rebekah Tiler was in no mood to let another opportunity pass her by.

The 16-year-old from Denholme duly broke both the British snatch, clean and jerk and overall total records for the women's 69kg category last Saturday in the Northern Open to give herself a big boost before next month's World Championships in the United States.

In a phenomenal display at her home club of Mytholmroyd, who are based at the local community centre, the British senior champion secured gold with her record-breaking triple whammy.

The Calderdale College student smashed Breeze’s best from 2006 with a 100kg effort and then bettered her previous clean and jerk British senior record by 2kg with a 126kg lift to set a new combined total record of 226kg.

Beforehand, the teenager wrote on Facebook: "I will be competing in the very busy Northern Open on Saturday where I begin to go heavy on my lifts to prepare for the World seniors in USA.

"I hope to do 95kg snatch and 120kg clean and jerk as a good base to work on but I think I might be going more as ed (coach Halstead) wants to push me on the snatch because I was close to 98kg in Lithuania.

"I did 91kg in the gym with no real atmosphere, so with a bit of adrenalin I hope to do more."

Afterwards, she wrote: "I had one of my best days on the platform today at the NWL Open in Mytholmroyd, but I didn't feel too great with cold before I started to warm up but then as I got going I felt ok.

"I had a really good warm-up, my coach ed timed it perfect in the snatch and I started with 90kg. It felt really good and my next weight was 95kg, which equalled my current competition best.

"This was also very easy, my coach put up 98kg then asked me are you ok. I said I feel good and he asked for 100kg and feel really good and is a British senior record.

"Ed said it was my best lift. In the clean and jerk, I had a long wait but again I had a well-timed warm- up and started with 118kg.

"My next was 122kg, which broke a British Total Record but ed thought I could do more, so my 3rd attempt with 126kg (was) another British Senior Record, so I managed 3 British Senior records and my best total so far with 226kg.

"I feel very confident for the World Seniors in November, thanks to my sponsors Sport England, UK Sport and Herbalife, as well as Ian and my parents and my coach. thanks."

British Weight Lifting's chief executive officer Ashley Metcalfe said: “Rebekah has been in fantastic form of late, producing a series of exceptional displays that has seen her win silver in Peru at the recent World Youths and golds at the European Youth Championships and Commonwealth Youth Games.

"With this in mind, we’re delighted to see her progress continue with yet another record-breaking performance.

"Rebekah has been training relentlessly and, when coupled with such outstanding results on the platform, we are left certain her preparation is ideally placed ahead of next month's World Championships.”

The World Championships are in Houston on November 20-28.
