AS NOVEMBER threatens to be one of the warmest on record, the unexpected rise in water temperatures has seen an increase in the number of impressive bites and catches along several stretches of the River Aire around Keighley.

One experienced angler landed a bet-busting female pike in superb condition and returned her safely to the water. On the same day, several hundred yards upstream a junior Keighley member fought long and hard to bring a specimen adult chub to the bank after targeting a sheltered pool.

A number of fresh pegs have been cut into the bank on the river near Utley bridge as well as Silsden in readiness for anglers to enjoy the beautiful autumn colours and the rich variety of fish, including barbel and grayling, that populate the river waters.

The canal from Silsden through to Keighley has also seen plenty of activity with roach, perch and several bream weighing up to two and a half pounds being tempted out of the unseasonal warm waters by a combination of maggot and bread punch on size 14 and 16 hooks.

Keighley Angling Club members are reminded that the AGM takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday, November 17 at The Marquis of Granby, Riddlesden.
