KEIGHLEY-based Strike Taekwondo took a team of 17 to compete at the BTA (British Taekwondo Association) one-on-one fight day and poomsae competition in Scunthorpe.

It was mainly comprised of youngsters, with many taking part in their first competitive match. The poomsae (patterns) discipline started the day, with Strike's Ethan Horne, aged eight, getting the team off to a good start. He took second place out of 15 in the children's category.

The sparring then followed, with approximately half the team winning their fights. Devon Chan, aged 13, narrowly missed out on a win after the fight was tied and went into a third and final round, only to see him defeated by the narrowest of margins by Stephen Johnson of Galaxy Taekwondo.

Coach Lisa Winteridge said: "All students gained valuable experience. I was proud of every one of them for getting up there and giving it their all.

"The competition was a good warm-up ahead of the eighth England Open Championships in May at Manchester. We will be selecting a team in both the sparring and poomsae."

Fight Winners: Ethan Horne, Lewis Horne, Lewis Metcalfe, Jasmine Bellamy, Ehsan Siddique, Haaris Hussain, Oliver Smith, Jake Thornton.
