SUTTON B caused the main surprise in the Skipton & District League's Clarkson Cup by defeating Colne CC.

Wins by Peter Peacock and the ageless Rita Bland caused a major shock, while favourites Keighley A went through easily against Rolls Royce as big wins by Sharon Gadd, Richard Dunhill and David Jacques soon settled the match.

Devonshire A went through with a full house against Cross Hills C while Silsden Playing Fields A just edged the derby against their own B team, despite wins by Bob Scott and John Callanan.

Keith Coppen was Steeton A's only winner against Silsden. Also progressing are Sutton A, Gargrave A and a much stronger Broughton B.

In the Supplementary Cup, top sides Cononley A and Cross Hills A are through after narrow victories, while Sutton C made it a club three-timer after good wins by Carol Williams and Roy Attwood against Whinfield B. Also through to the next round on June 28 are Lund Park A and Cross Hills B.

Skipton Veterans almost caused a surprise in the Yorkshire ABA’s inter-district event, losing 29-27 to holders Bradford.

They could only muster two winners in the away leg at a slow-running Peel Park in the shape of John Parkin and Alister Keighley but should have had more. In the home match at Sutton, the much-maligned team could only manage one winner in the first four in the shape of Derek Metcalfe. But they suddenly sprung to life and recorded four straight wins led by captain Derek Seed’s 21-7 success to gain a deserved victory. Their next game is versus much-improved West Riding on June 17.

Peter Clark, of Cross Roads, reached the final of the Halifax Merit recently at Sowerby T&BC, only to lose 21-15 to Mark Regan of Brighouse. In the semi-final, Clark beat team-mate Richard Hargreaves.

The scheduled Dick Keighley event in Skipton was cancelled due to lack of entries, while they are still required for the Summer Doubles on June 16. The Leading Lady event at Lund Park on Sunday is also under threat.

In Yorkshire ABA team events, Cross Roads advanced at the expense of Canalside B, who were a player short, while Oxenhope beat The Hollies in the Hutchinson Cup at Rufford Park.

In the same event, Devon conceded their game against Rothwell after popular captain Richard Baker was taken ill on the green at Hove Edge.

In the Henry Taylor competition, Broughton lost to Crosland Moor B, despite a 21-4 win by D Russell, but Cross Hills are through in the Radley Trophy after a good win by top star Ken Brenkley against Linthwaite Hall at Shipley. Next matches are on June 25.

The Yorkshire ABA team recorded a comfortable victory over Cheshire recently, with Cross Hills' Phil Dowgill excelling in the away game.

The Worth Valley Veterans are back in action tomorrow in the Federation Over-60s event at Elland C&BC and face games against Barnsley, Wath and Leeds, while the Valley/Skipton Juniors meet Leeds B at Lund Park on Saturday (7pm) in Yorkshire League Division Two.

The Hebden Handicap Doubles are at Heptonstall on Sunday.
