LUND Park’s John Hamer and Pam Robinson were deserved winners of the Worth Valley Veterans Handicap Doubles at Broughton Road.

Despite some heavy showers, the competition produced some good play on a superb green.

Hamer and Robinson easily defeated host players Donald Ripley and league secretary Mick Demain 21-5 to win the event for the second time. Losing in the semi-finals were Pauline and Robert Lightowler, and Bill Duckworth and Hazel Cartwright.

Keighley BC hosted the Worth Valley Trebles in which a shortage of entries resulted in a round-robin event won in fine style by Anthony Emmott, Jason Jennings and Billy Bestwick of Sutton. They defeated Nigel Hall, George Hutson and Peter O’Neill of the home club 13-3.

The last three local clubs in Yorkshire ABA’s team events have been eliminated. Cross Roads were hammered by Kirkheaton Cons at Whitkirk, going down by over 100 points in the Yorkshire Cup, with only one winner in Les Foster.

In the Hutchinson Trophy, Oxenhope were well beaten by holders Glasshoughton Welfare in a rain-affected match at Cleckheaton Sports, where David Hemsley and Gillian Johnson were the only winners.

In the Radley Trophy, Cross Hills managed seven winners out of 12 but lost by five points against Birkenshaw at Meltham, despite a 21-11 win by guest player John Parkin.

The Skipton KO team events have now reached the semi-final stage, which will be played on July 7. In the Clarkson Cup, there were wins by Silsden Playing Fields A, Gargrave A, Sutton A and Devon A.

Silsden PF easily accounted for Sutton B, for who Professor Dennis Wynne-Jones was the only winner, while Gargrave A surprised Silsden, despite Alan Thornber’s 21-8 for the Cobbydalers.

Devon accounted for a lacklustre Keighley A while Sutton had six single-figure wins accounting for Broughton B.

In the Supplementary event, the last four are Cross Hills B, Gargrave C, Cononley A and Whinfield A. Cross Hills accounted for a poor Lund Park A thanks to wins by Idris Wade, Derek Squires and Christine Hasselby, while Jason Jennnings' win for Sutton could not save them against Gargrave. Odds-on favourites Cononley A easily beat Broughton A but Cross Hills A hit the buffers as they lost by one point to Whinfield A, who had a solitary winner in Brenda Heslop to clinch a shock victory.

Kath Whitaker and Pauline Lightowler, both of Lund Park, were in the Yorkshire Ladies Veterans team that reached the final of the event at Severnside in Shrewsbury, only to lose to Cheshire.

The Skipton Inter-District Vets are back in action tomorrow when they meet Huddersfield at 1.30pm. The home leg is at Craven BC, while the away side travel to Crosland Moor.

The Yorkshire ABA’s Ladies Inter-District is on Sunday (10am) in the West Riding area. The Skipton team are grouped with the hosts and Bradford.

The four finalists in the Skipton Summer Doubles play to a finish at Broughton Road on Sunday (6.45pm).

In the saddest news of the week, Worth Valley Bowling Association chairman Andy Abell, of Skipton, has passed away after a long illness.

The league passes on its deepest condolences to his wife, Viv, one of the area’s leading players, and all his family, as it does to Sutton's Peter Lofts, who has also passed away.
