WORTH Valley top the table in the Federation of Crown Green Bowls Over-60s Yorkshire League –but their success to date is clouded by fears of the league's future.

They were due to play Barnsley & Wath at Elland C&BC last Friday but their opponents – one of the strongest sides in the competition – have withdrawn from the league.

Valley then beat Doncaster easily but their opponents had only seven men and put up little resistance.

The league had been going well for many seasons at a number of venues in Yorkshire and once boasted three teams from Leeds, two from Doncaster, two from Worth Valley and others from North Yorkshire, but it seems it faces problems next season.

Next matches are against leaders Halifax A and B teams on August 5 and 12 respectively.

The Skipton Inter-District Veterans play their last game of the campaign tomorrow when they entertain Wakefield in the Yorkshire ABA event. The home leg is at Sutton Park at 1.30pm while the away squad make the long trip to West Bretton. Let us hope the side can sign off on a winning note after a disappointing season.

The Worth Valley Leagues have now been completed, with Denholme A the surprise winners of Division One, ending level on points with favourite Cross Roads A but having won one game more. This was their first success in over 50 years of trying! Relegated are Whins Wood A.

In Division Two, Cullingworth A came out on top ahead of Silsden Playing Fields, who pipped Highfield A, while Bradshaw B ended bottom.

In Division Three, Bingley A were well ahead of runners-up Cullingworth B.

Teams can now concentrate on the End of Season Cups culminating in the finals at Broughton Road on September 24.

The Valley Doubles was cancelled last Sunday due to absence of entries.

This Sunday sees the Yorkshire Men’s Inter-District event in Huddersfield (10am start).

Skipton play at Almondbury Liberal Club and meet the East Coast and bogey side Wakefield, the holders of the title, in a tough game. If progress is made, the semi-finals are down for Meltham BC and the final at Marsh United.

Action takes place tonight with the Skipton team KO finals for the Clarkson and Supplementary Cups, where two close games are envisaged.

In the Clarkson Cup, Devon A meet Gargrave A at Broughton Road, while Silsden BC is the venue for the Supplementary final between Cross Hills B and Whinfield A. Both matches start at 7pm.
