DENHOLME'S Steve Griffiths and Ben Johnson triumphed in the Worth Valley League's End of Season Doubles at Keighley BC.

They beat Peter Walsh and Chris Rooney 21-15 in a good final. Losing in the last four were Ken and Muriel Baker, and top snooker star Tommy Johnson and Harry Ryder.

President Trevor Hargreaves was on hand to present the prizes as the curtain came down on the league season.

On the previous day, the League's cup finals were completed at Broughton Road on an excellent green.

The Division One final was a repeat of last year’s showpiece, with league winners Denholme A taking on old rivals Cross Roads, who made the best start with three early winners.

They seemed set for an easy success until the last four players for Denholme took the game by the scruff of the neck to record consecutive victories and take the game by some margin.

Griffiths was in fine form again, along with sister Pauline Lightowler, while efforts by Richard Hargreaves, Phil Anderson and Brian Greenwood came to nought.

The Supplementary Cup in Division Two was a close affair between Silsden Playing Fields and Lund Park B but the Cobbydalers proved more consistent to win by 13 points with six winners. Lund Park were not at their best and could only muster two winners in veterans Bill Duckworth and Rita Bland.

The Third Division final saw Bingley A prove far too good for their own B team and almost had a full house, with only Jack Baxter preventing a complete whitewash in the Chairman’s Cup.

Former Yorkshire president Roy Sanderson was on hand to present the prizes.

Chris Wilson, of Keighley BC, retained the Skipton Floodlit Handicap for the Norman Johnston Trophy at a gloomy and damp Lund Park when he comfortably defeated Richard Perry, himself a past winner, 21-9.

Only 20 entries arrived so the event was completed in one night, with Neil Hargreaves and Billy Cater losing in the semis.

Richard Hargreaves won the Hebden Bridge Champion of Champions event at Saville with a 21-5 victory over Graeme Brenkley of Ripponden.

He was also part of the Cross Roads four-Man team who won the Hebden Royd event at Lund Park after an easy win over Sowerby T&BC where he teamed up with Phil Anderson, Ryan Tiler and Peter Walsh.

They survived a semi-final scare by two points while other representatives, Keighley BC, went down by a single point.

The Yorkshire Parks Veterans team have regained the national title with an easy win over a poor Cheshire team, Barry Turnbull and Mick Bastow recording good wins in the home leg at Hove Edge while Mick Skwarek won in the away tie in Stockport.

Skipton's Craven BC are holding one of their popular 32s on Sunday (10am).
