POWERLIFTERS from Keighley were successful in a national competition held in Bradford.

The athletes from Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure took on weight lifters from around the UK this month. (November).

Medal winners included Chris Woodhead from Haworth and James Crossley from East Morton, who both represented the UK last year at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles.

Also successful were Simon Waggett from Silsden, Mark Knights from Haworth, Stephen Rundle from Cullingworth, and Israr Abbas from Bradford.

The powerlifting contest was one of the qualifying competitions for the Special Olympics National Games due to be held in Sheffield next year.

The Keighley town mayor, Cllr Shabir Ahmed, and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Alun Griffiths, presented medals after the contest.

Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure plans to send 55 athletes to the Sheffield games, including 23 from the Keighley area.

The organisation has to raise £8,600 for the team to take part, including kit, training, travel and accommodation. Anyone who can help should e-mail bsr1@btconnect.com or call 01274 437093.
