IAN Field cut a frustrated figure after the elite men's race at the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Championships in Luxembourg last Sunday.

The East Morton man was hoping to crack the top 20 at Bieles after a successful domestic season in which he won the National Trophy Series and the National Championships.

However, a puncture cost him as he was moving through the field from the rear of the grid, and the Hargroves-Ridley-Montezuma rider eventually finished 37th, two laps behind Belguim's Wout van Aert, who retained his title.

After the race, Field was disappointed at how the race unfolded, saying: "I know it's the same for everyone but it's frustrating when you're holding back a bit and not racing on the limit because you don't want to puncture again.

"It's a bit of a funny one, but that's World Championships – one of those days."

Bradford's Billy Harding, who was feeling under powered, was also 37th in the under-23 men's race, but there had been glory the day before with a British 1-2-3 in the junior men's race.

Otley's Tom Pidcock (Oldfield-Paul Milnes Cycles ERT) was followed home by Dan Tulett (Specialized Racing) and former Paul Milnes rider Ben Turner (HMT with JLT Condor), while defending champion Evie Richards (100%ME) took bronze in the under-23 women's race.

It was an emotional weekend for the British team as 15-year-old Charlie Craig (SCOTT Racing), who had finished second in the under-16 boys' race at the nationals at Peel Park last month, had died in his sleep the previous week.

In the elite women's race, national champion Nikki Brammeier (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) was ninth, with Helen Wyman (Next Wyman) 16th and Hannah Payton (Team Kinesis UK) 27th.
