BRADFORD'S greatest sporting talent will be celebrated and applauded when the annual Provident Bradford Sports Awards takes place tonight at the Bradford Hotel.

It is the second year the ceremony is being held by Active Bradford, which works to promote and develop opportunities for people to be active and become passionate about sport.

There are awards for over 18s (senior achievers), including best sportsman, sportswoman, disability sportsperson, club/team or amateur club/team, with corresponding categories for under-18s (young achievers).

Bradford Council is shortlisted for most active organisation or workplace, and three schools have been shortlisted under best Active School - All Saints Church of England Primary School, Baildon Church of England Primary School and Haworth Primary School.

There is also a category recognising the hard work by coaches and volunteers, with an award for Sporting Highlight, which includes Bradford City Runs and the Dragonboat Festival, both of which have support from Bradford Council.

The third shortlisted event in that category is the AEGON Ilkley Tennis Trophy 2016.

All three have attracted huge support from people across the district and beyond.

Bradford City,  Bradford Park Avenue, Bradford Bulls and Keighley Cougars are all up for the best club/team.

Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's portfolio holder for sport, said: "We're delighted the awards are being held for a second year and are proud to have such an amazing selection of people shortlisted for the 2017 Bradford Sports Awards.

"Yorkshire people are passionate about sport and we believe physical activity plays a huge role in the health and prosperity of Bradford."

Wayne Jacobs, chair of Active Bradford, said: "It's been another incredible sporting year for Bradford.

"Every day there are countless people enjoying physical activity and sport across our district and there are real sporting achievements being made and we, rightly so, are going to honour them.

"Alongside this, there are many others who serve to help to make this happen in a voluntary capacity and these selfless individuals will also receive the credit they thoroughly deserve."

Kersten England, chief executive of Bradford Council, is presenting awards under the category of Active Achievers sponsored by Bradford Council.

This category includes Active Organisation/Workplace - of which the council are finalists - Active Lifestyle, Student Sport-Sportsperson and Student Sport - club/team.

Active Bradford consists of a number of partners, including Bradford Council, the University of Bradford, Bradford College, Born in Bradford, Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure, Bradford City, Bradford Bulls,  Yorkshire Sport Foundation, the health sector, Sport England, One in A Million and other representatives of community sport.

The awards are part of Active Bradford's vision to make Bradford a place where everyone chooses to make physical activity and sport an everyday part of their lives.
