TOM MOSES only has one word to describe the Tour de Yorkshire – unbelievable.

After taking part in the three-day stage race which ended last Sunday in Sheffield, the Oakworth rider, who was 25 yesterday, said: "It was a tremendous spectacle and crowds were ten times what we sometimes have for other races abroad.

"The foreign riders who take part in the Tour de Yorkshire are surprised by this, and this was as good as the other two.

"However, it is up against races, such as the Tour de Romandie, which have been part of the international calendar for years and take away some of the riders who are preparing for the Tour de France, while the Giro d'Italia starts tomorrow, so some have been resting up for that."

Moses was 123rd after the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire between the great east-coast resorts of Bridlington and Scarborough, 89th in stage two, which went from Tadcaster to Harrogate, and 57th on what was dubbed the Yorkshire Terrier – stage three between Bradford and Sheffield.

The JLT Condor rider, who sounded in fine fettle, added: "The team's main job was to try and get Ian Bibby up the field – he could even have won it – but he took a bad knock after being involved in that crash on Scarborough sea front on day one and was suffering.

"The third stage was hard as there were those four climbs near the end, but I am feeling okay overall as there was a headwind for most of the stages.

"It would have been a lot harder if there had been a tail-wind."

Serge Pauwels' final stage victory was enough to win the overall general classification for Team Dimension Data, which included Steeton-born Scott Thwaites.

Next up for Moses is the Lincoln Grand Prix on Saturday, May 13, while his next major overseas assignment is the eight-day An Post Ras – Ireland's top cycling event – from May 21-28.

Meanwhile, East Morton rider Annie Simpson produced an impressive 32nd place finish in the Asda Women's Tour de Yorkshire race last Saturday, which was won by Otley's Lizzie Deignan.

Simpson was racing for Drops cycling outfit that came seventh in the team classification, with Anna Christian claiming their highest individual position in 12th.

Simpson, who grew up in Wilsden, tweeted: "What a day! What a race! So so proud of my county and thank you to everyone that shouted for me, I felt like I heard them all. #32nd #madeup."
