THERE was a mixture of good and bad news for local clubs in the Skipton Bowling Association's Clarkson and Supplementary Cup second-round matches.

In the Clarkson Cup, Keighley A annihilated their old rivals Cononley A at a damp Oakworth to win by over 100 points, while there was a surprise win for Devonshire B, who beat a disorganised Sutton A at Addingham.

Addingham A themselves surprised Silsden Playing Fields A thanks to two good wins by John Jubb and Ted Wray. Lund Park A also caused a surprise by defeating high-flying Colne Cricket thanks to good efforts by Alan Downing and Wayne Hudson, while single-figure victories by Glynn Bottomley and Karl Lockwood gave Oakworth a routine win over a weakened Steeton A at Keighley.

In what is an up and down season for Cross Hills A, they were defeated by Devon A.

In the Supplementary Cup, there were good wins by Keighley B, Steeton B, Sutton B, Silsden Playing Fields B and Lund Park B, who beat Grassington thanks to wins by Bill Duckworth and Stuart Hall.

Both knockout competitions continue on June 29.

The Skipton Veterans Inter-District team found Huddersfield too strong as they went down 32-24 to their opponents. They shared the winners at Cross Hills to triumph 16-12, with wins for Mick Duke, Derek Seed, Cliff Taylor and David Jacques, but only managed a couple away at Milnsbridge BC in the shape of Skipton’s Kevin Burnett and Mick Demain. The next match is against top side Bradford on June 16.

Settle are the only local side left in the Yorkshire ABA’s events when they progressed in the Radley Trophy. They defeated Brockholes A at Wibsey Park by 17 points, with good wins by John Chambers and John McKay proving crucial.

In the Yorkshire Cup, Broughton Road lost by over a ton to Ossett Flying Horse at Hipperholme. They had only two winners in Tim Bucke and guest player Keith Moore, while in the Hutchinson Cup for mixed teams, a weakened Cross Hills lost by a large margin to Hove Edge A at Crossgates with only Christine Hasselby emerging from the wreckage unscathed. Next match for Settle is on June 17.

The Yorkshire Parks ABA’s first games in the Brotherton and Wood Cups are tomorrow night where Cross Roads A meet Asa Briggs A at Royd House and Cross Roads B are in action at Guiseley.

The Worth Valley Doubles are scheduled for Silsden Playing Fields on Sunday, combining both Merit and Handicap events. More details are available from Mick Demain.
