THE FINALS of the Skipton KO team events for the Clarkson and Supplementary Cups will be between Keighley A and Devon A, and Whinfield A and Settle A respectively.

Devon swamped Lund Park A on a difficult green at Steeton with a full set of winners, while Keighley A had only one loser against Broughton A at Colne Cricket.

There were closer games in the Supplementary event but Whinfield A proved just too strong for Sutton B despite good wins by Peter Finnie and Irene Stone for the losers. Silsden Playing Fields B lost by a similar margin to Settle A at Alkincotes Park despite having three winners in Margaret Slater, Bob Scott and David Jefferson.

The finals will be held on Thursday, August 31.

The Worth Valley League programme has already been completed, with the Division One title returning to Cross Roads after a number of years despite their weakened team being thumped by Lund Park A in the last match.

Last year's winners Denholme A finished as runners-up, while Bradshaw A and Silsden PF ended at the bottom.

In Division Two, Bingley A took the top spot ahead of Haworth with Steeton B and Cullingworth B at the wrong end of the table. Bradshaw B and Denholme B took the top spots in Division Three.

Teams now take a break until August 5 when the League Cups are competed for, with the divisional finals on September 30.

The Association’s Valley Handicap is on Saturday at Cross Roads, with details available from Mick Demain.

The Skipton Veterans Handicap was completed at Gargrave and saw a deserved victory for league secretary Peter Haworth, who beat a couple of favourites before disposing of Brian Farrage of Settle 21-15 in the final. Losing in the semis were Trevor Hargreaves and John Chambers.

The big disappointment of the weekend was the withdrawal of the Skipton Inter-District team from the Yorkshire ABA event in Bridlington because they could not raise a side, a sad reflection of the local game at present.

Some Federation District games went ahead last weekend which saw victories for locals Chris Wilson (for Bradford against Menai), and Kevin Mackie, David Smith, Sharon Gadd and Alan Buckley (for Aire-Wharfe B against the British Police). Some locals were on the A team at Nuneaton but came away empty-handed.

Skipton Vets return to action tomorrow in the Inter-District event against an improving West Riding. The locals persevere with Sutton as the home venue while the away side travel to Thornhill. Start is at 1.30pm.

Phil Dowgill, of Cross Hills, represents local interest in the British Championship Finals in the north Midlands area on Saturday.

The Yorkshire Mixed Pairs finals are at Spen Victoria on Saturday.
