ALISTAIR Brownlee ended 2017 on a winning note by romping to victory in the Auld Lang Syne Fell race.

The Olympic triathlon champion of 2012 and 2016 is no stranger to success in the New Year's Eve race at Haworth's Penistone Park.

This was his fifth victory as he again gave his support to Dave and Eileen Woodhead who were organising the event for the last time.

Brownlee, who will be bidding for Commonwealth Games gold at Gold Coast later this year, overcame the cold and damp conditions to win the 9.6k race in 44min 54sec.

His time was well outside the record of 38:57 set by Andi Jones in 2008, but he was 16 seconds head of Keswick's Carl Hill at the finish.

Third place went to Calder Valley's Max Wharton who recorded a time of 45:32.

Keighley & Craven's Jimmy Lund, a student at Ermysted's Grammar School, had a good run and was rewarded with seventh place in 36:43.

Keighley-based Ian Holmes followed him over the line in eighth place for his club Bingley Harriers in 46:49.

Marc Sennett was the top finisher for Wharfedale Harriers as he claimed 17th place in 48:44.

The top woman finisher was Calder Valley's Nichola Jackson. She claimed 20th place in 49:49.

Just as in the men's race, that was well down on the record of 46:33 sent by Long Preston athlete Mary Wilkinson in 2010.

Many of the competitors wore fancy dress for the occasion. There was a Batman, a Donald Trump and a Fred Flintstone as well as a cardboard box.

Runners from Keighley & Craven wore T-shirt emblazoned with a message of thanks for Dave and Eileen Woodhead who were winners in the eyes of all the runners.
