THE team representing the Hebden League put up a brave performance in the Yorkshire Park annual Inter-City event held in the Aire-Wharfe area.

They played the hosts in the first match in Group B at Shipley Club and performed well on a difficult green, going down 8-4 with four winners in Neil Hargreaves, Scott McHugh, Keiron Bannister and the experienced Phil Anderson.

They then travelled to Baildon to meet the strong Bradford team who had lost their first game against Sheffield.

That seemed to affect their opponents as the locals put in a great performance to beat their old rivals 8-4. The winners were Richard, Trevor and Neil Hargreaves plus Phil Anderson, David Hemsley and Craig Wilkins.

The last group match was against Sheffield at Rufford Park, which was a different proposition, as the team were outclassed, losing 11-1 with only Neil Hargreaves tasting success to remain undefeated on the day.

The final at Guiseley was expected to bring a victory to the South Yorkshiremen but they crashed out to a strong Leeds team from Group A.

At the same time, the Skipton Summer Doubles were played to a finish at Sutton with only 10 pairs in a once popular event.

The winners were Les Foster of Devon and Peter Shaw, of Craven, who defeated the Craven pairing of Mick Demain and Warren Burnett Junior 15-12 in a close game. Semi-finalists were Carol Harrison and Bev Guffick, Warren Burnett and Catherine Leghe.

Local qualifiers in the Yorkshire Merit were Peter Clark, of Devon, a past runner-up, and Trevor Hargreaves, of Keighley BC. On finals day itself, Hargreaves made an early exit, while Clark won a good game before losing to Craig Gant, of Thongsbridge, the eventual winner.
