Keighley open with a victory

Keighley Cricket Club opened their season with a four-wicket victory at last year's promotion rivals Morley on Saturday.

Batting first Morley were dismissed for 112 with Keighley's teenage seamer Max Davidson taking 4-50. Richard Robinson was his usual miserly self, conceding ten runs off 14 overs and taking two wickets. He also had eight maidens. Dale Towler made his return to the club taking 2-18 in 11 overs.

Some of Morley's shot selections left something to be desired and it was only a gutsy 45 from Dave Nebard, on his return from injury, that helped the hosts past three figures.

Keighley still eased to their target with four wickets to spare, skipper Steve Reape making 37. Liam Dyson chipped in with a 23 while Robinson (19) and Matthew Bottomley also scored in double figures.

Keighley's second team also scored 15 points with an easy eight-wicket victory at home to Spen Victoria.

Batting first Spen managed to reach a scored of 111 all out. Faisal Rajput scored as Paul Wilkinson did most of the damage for Keighley, taking 4-22 in 9.2 overs. New recruit, Steve Hartley who arrived from Oakworth, took 1-9 in eight overs, a bowling performance which include four maidens.

In reply opener Timothy Burnley guided the Lawkholme Lane side through their innings with an unbeaten 36. Fellow opener Alan Broadley scored 30 and Stuart Ratcliffe added 26 as Keighley cruised home with a total of 112-2.

Both Keighley's first and second team were the beneficiaries of Wakefield City's decision to withdraw its teams from the Heavy Woollen and Crowther Cup.

None of the ties, which were due to be contested Sunday, were played because of the wet weather.
