COUGARS coach Craig Lingard believes Davey Dixon's call-up to the extended Scotland squad ahead of this autumn's World Cup in Australia is well deserved.

The utility player, who played for Scotland's youth team, has begun to impress the Keighley chief since joining from Castleford for the current campaign.

Lingard said of Davey's call-up: "It's a massive achievement. It's been a bit of a learning curve for Davey, who came with a good reputation after a really good season with the under-19s at Cas.

"As the system stands with their first-team squad they have no reserve team and Davey was one of the players not offered a full-time contract.

"He dropped down to us and initially it took him a while to get used to the transition from playing against kids his own age to playing against men week in, week out.

"I think he’ll admit that himself but he is getting used to that transition now and really stood up in some recent games.

"The call-up with the Scottish squad is merited and well deserved."
