Keighley coach Keith Dixon revealed his promoted side are determined to go one better and lift the Pennine League Championship Division title.

The Rose Cottage outfit’s 26-24 win at home to Bank Top last Saturday secured their spot in the Premier Division next season.

Success comes in just the second year after Keighley Albion and Keighley Town merged to form one club and now Dixon’s troop are intent on doing it in style with silverware.

He said: “It would be a shame to have come all this way and just finish runners-up.

“Don’t get me wrong, we are really happy with promotion but the lads don’t just want that, they want to go up as champions.”

Keighley have just held the edge for much of the season in what has been a largely two-horse race at the top of the table between themselves and West Bowling.

They trail their Bradford rivals in second place by two points but have a game in hand on them with two matches left. And Keighley would finish top if the pair end level on points as they have the better aggregate score based on the head-to-head between the sides.

Dixon, whose side head to Westgate Wolves tomorrow before their final match at home to Nevison Leap on May 25, added: “For a lot of the lads, it would be their first title in amateur rugby and would be a big thing for them.”

The coach is thrilled at the way his players have gelled together and believes a trophy could lay down a marker for the future.

He said: “It would be the first title for Keighley Amateur Rugby Club, who hopefully will be around for a long time.

“Hopefully we will look back in time and say that May 25 was an important date in Keighley’s history. However, we still have a lot of hard work to do.”

Bank Top were the only side who could beat Keighley to promotion and they came close to snatching victory last Saturday.

Dixon said: “It was too close for comfort but I think our fitness paid off in the end.”
