Cowling Harlequins 32 Farnley Falcons A 22

Cowling got back to winning ways with their fourth victory of the season to cement their place in the top four.

With Farnley arriving late, Quins were fired up and it was not long until they took the lead as James Bowdin burst over in the corner for the first of his two tries.

Rob Owlett missed the conversion but the visitors were giving away penalties and Cowling went in again when Gary Nelson hit a short ball off Kirk Verity to score.

Ross Pearson then powered over from acting half and Owlett added the extras before Farnley got on the scoreboard when missed tackles allowed them a soft try.

Quins hit back when Nelson ran 40 metres to power over and Owlett added the conversion to make it 20-4 at half-time.

The penalty count changed in the second half as Cowling were the ones being punished for infringements.

Farnley deservingly added to their tally in the corner and, in his attempt to stop the scorer, Cowling’s full back was yellow-carded, giving the Falcons an extra kick at goal.

Quins captain Billy-Jay Baker was also sin-binned to leave his team down to 11 but they held strong and Bowdin went in for his second try, with Owlett adding the extras.

Cowling’s full back returned to the field but the referee got his card out again and sent young winger James Agnew from the field for asking a question.

Farnley broke the Quins line with two more tries but Cowling were not about to let victory slip through their hands.

A high kick by Pearson saw returning Quin Martin Monks dive in for a score and Daz Greenwood added the two to ensure the spoils went their way.

This Saturday, the Harle-quins entertain Odsal Sed-bergh A in a return match after the corresponding fixture earlier in the season was abandoned after an hour in a controversial clash with the score at 16-16.

* Keighley’s hopes of reaching the Hamuel Reichenbacher BARLA Yorkshire Cup semi-finals for a second consecutive year were thwarted as they lost 23-6 at Upton.

The Rose Cottage side had high hopes of making the last four again – where they lost to Sharlston Rovers last season – but the Champ-ionship hosts were comfortable winners.

Keighley are back in league action on Saturday when they entertain Halifax Irish.
