Cowling Harlequins 28 King Cross Park A 4

Quins were indebted to Silsden for allowing them to use their pitch to get the game on and, in wet and wild conditions, they made the most of their opportunity to progress to the semi-finals of the Halifax ARL Joe Blackford Memorial Trophy for the first time.

This was the third en-counter between the sides and Cowling were expecting a tough test against a Halifax outfit seeking re-venge.

The game started fast as the Quins came out in a buoyant mood to put King Cross under all kinds of pressure.

It paid off when strong-running Gary Nelson powered over out wide, and man of the match Eddie Hall added the extras.

From the short kick-off, Craig Nicholson collected on the full and raced 60 metres to dive over and the conversion was added.

Hall struck again for the hosts as he dived over from short range but was unable to add the two.

Liam Kelly and captain Kirk Verity ran well to get Cowling in strike range again, only for the referee to rule against the hosts.

Instead, King Cross scored a try in the corner off the back of three penalties.

Cowling came out for the second half determined to prevent a fightback from the visitors.

Nelson powered over for his second try and, though the goal was missed by Hall, Quins maintained their impetus when Daz Greenwood powered over out wide.

Kelly missed the conversion but then found a gap in the King Cross line to race in and ensure the hosts were home and dry.

Cowling bid to back up their great win at home to improving Selby Warriors A on Saturday.
