Division Six West: Cowling Harlequins 12 Queensbury B 36

THIS had to be the Quins’ worst performance of the season so far, despite them having a full 17-man squad to pick from.

Cowling went into the game confident and it showed as early as the first minute.

Quick hands and a controlled set got Jay Bingham into a gap and he raced past the full back to score the first try. Daz Greenwood added the conversion but then the game plan went out of the window.

Numerous missed tackles at the heart of the Quins defence let Queensbury in for a brace of scores before good work from man of the match Liam Mitchell and new signing Daniel Spencer helped Cowling power upfield.

However, they did not complete their sets and gifted Bury the ball.

Outstanding defence from Bingham, Grant Ackroyd and Antony Packer put pressure on the Bradford side before Alister Feather connected with Wayne Verity to put Mitchell over near the line.

Feather kicked the two to leave the hosts 20-12 down at the break.

Cowling tried everything to get over the Queensbury line after the break and they did so after a touch of brilliance from full back Ackroyd.

His up-and-under kick bounced over Bury’s line and Ackroyd pounced on the loose ball to touch down but the try was disallowed for offside. Quins questioned the call as it was Ackroyd who had kicked the ball through.

It was the closest Cowling came as Queensbury put the game to bed. Quins need to regroup when they host old rivals Greetland A on Saturday.
