Keighley Albion u-14s 22 West Bowling u-14s 16

FANTASTIC performances from captain Bobby Darbyshire and full back Joel Waddington saw Albion claim their second league victory.

Darbyshire was awesome in attack in the first half, while Waddington’s defence was exceptional and saw him save a handful of tries with some scything tackles.

Darbyshire put Josh Tenniswood clear on a 40-metre sprint to go under the posts. Bowling’s indiscipline saw them give a penalty away under their posts which Jacob Cox converted.

Kobe O’Brien slipped the ball to the supporting Darbyshire to go 50 metres and touch down under the sticks.

Bowling added two tries to cut Albion’s lead to four points. However, Darbyshire popped up again to go half the length of the field for a try of the season contender.

Outstanding defence kept West at bay for most of the second half and Keighley’s chance came when Harry Lewis broke up the pitch before Jake Moran gratefully scampered over.

Albion’s lack of substitutes took its toll as West scored a converted try to set up a grandstand finish. Bowling’s prop broke clear but Waddington caught him with a superb tackle. Will Halliday also shone for Albion but the whole team deserve credit.

Instead of last season’s massacre at the hands of the Trojans, it was Albion dishing out the punishment this time.

Evan Jones crashed over before Caleb McConville danced his way through. Jones added his second after a fantastic surge and Ben McParland broke clear to put Keighley in command at half-time.

Reece Smollen prevented the hosts taking advantage of an overlap before McParland struck another blow by romping through from past halfway.

Thornhill squeezed over out wide before Albion scored their try of the game. A sloppy pass put Oliver Moran in trouble but he worked his way out of the in-goal area. A lovely offload to Lewis Bloodworth saw him sprint down the touchline from inside his own 20 before scoring under the sticks.

Thornhill nominated Bloodworth as Albion’s best player, with McParland and McConville taking the parents and players award respectively and Moran the magic moment.

Marcus Scargill stormed through a wrong-footed defence to set the tone.

Full of confidence and producing great defence, Keighley moved the ball around well, with the forwards using their physical presence to drive Swillington back.

Shortly before the break Sam Lewis-Gillum forced his way over. Lewis Reynoldson converted both tries to lead 12-0 at half-time. The game was put beyond doubt when Philip Sabin crashed through the defence to score a superb 40-metre try.

Magic Moment – Marcus Scargill; Opposition Man of the Match – Sam Lewis-Gillum; Top Tackler – Josh Catton; Coaches Award – Sam Lewis-Gillum; Parents’ Award – Philip Sabin.

Albion’s improvement was there for all to see as Brotherton posed a big test.

Callum Mckay made some important tackles on the wing, earning himself the magic moment award. Mark Surridge impressed again in defence to earn the most improved award, while Lucas Evans and Ellis Sands were the top tacklers.

Jake Bartlam was man of the match and Finley Lynam proved a real handful in picking up the opposition’s award. Try-scorers were Evans, Jimmy Young and Bartlam.
