Keighley Albion u14s 12 East Leeds u-14s 20

Interest in this season’s main cup competition ended in the first round for Albion against unbeaten East Leeds.

However, they gave their visitors a real scare as the lead changed hands four times and Albion still held a two-point advantage going into the last five minutes.

East Leeds had the edge in the first half without being able to translate their superiority into points. They held a 10-8 interval lead, but in between, Albion had nosed in front with tries by Ciaran Bartlett and Matty Smith.

Indeed, Bartlett’s score was an early candidate for try of the season as he ran from deep inside his own half, holding off challengers before breaking free on half-way to outrun determined chasers.

For most of the second half Albion looked as though they could win the tie. They came desperately close when Morgan Mirzaali was held up when over the line before taking advantage of a sin-binning offence which reduced the visitors to 12 men.

Almost immediately Alex Downes went over in the corner and Joel Livock was desperately unlucky to see his conversion attempt strike the crossbar.

In an unfortunate repeat of the previous game, Keighley were hit by a late opposition revival which brought two tries in the last five minutes.

Match awards went to Jack Popeley, Zak Blackburn and Bartlett.

West Bowling u-11s 26 Silsden Storm u-11s 16

This was a fixture the young Storm boys were eagerly waiting for. Twelve months ago the same Bowling side beat the Cobbydalers 74-12 but Silsden's improvement was there for all to see.

If they could have erased four dropped balls at critical points, the scoreline would have been different. All 17 Cobbydalers played their hearts out, while award winners were Ellis Sands (player of the week), Harry Hardaker (magic moment and opposition man of match) and Tommy Conway (man of match, top tackler and supporters' player).

Try-scorers were Conway, Hardaker and Joe Beck, with Robson Weir kicking two from three conversions.
