Keighley 30 Leeds Medics & Dentists 10

THE dismissal of a Leeds Medics & Dentists centre early in the second half gave Keighley the break they needed to win their first game of the season in SSE Yorkshire Division Two.

Medics started well, and kept the home side pinned in their half for ten minutes, Phillip Gardner using his pace to outstrip the hosts' defence.

But Keighley fly half Alan Ebbrell landed a penalty and then charged down a kick, which he converted to make it 10-5.

Medics’ response was instant, superb back play again taking play to the corner, where an inside pass found flanker Josh Janvier in support for a well-deserved try.

At the start of the second half, Ebbrell calmed Keighley’s nerves with a penalty and a few minutes later came the sending-off for a second yellow card.

The home forwards then battered their way into the visitors' 22 and pressure at a scrum gave flanker Tom Lowther the chance to pounce on a loose ball to score.

Although the Medics battled away, they found the going difficult and a telling break by Keighley’s outstanding scrum half Danny Lester was finished off by Sam Blakeley, Ebbrell adding the extras.

With a final flourish, Keighley earned a bonus point when winger Luke Carter crossed wide out.
