SSE Yorkshire Division Two

West Leeds 15

Keighley 3

THE rugby matched the gloomy weather, and both teams were very average at best.

However, Keighley, without a recognised scrum half, were always going to find the going difficult, and so it proved.

West Leeds, with a dominant scrum, were quickly into the game and put the visitors under pressure on their own line, quick ball across the backs and a rugby league-style grubber kick through gave winger Danny Booth the simplest of tries in the corner. Keighley responded well and exerted a lot of pressure, but were unable to score through poor ball retention and poor execution of basic skills.

Eventually breaking out of defence, the hosts put pressure on the Keighley scrum, and once again quick hands along the backs created another try in the corner for Booth.

The second half was turgid, with most of the play taking place in midfield. However, both teams had their moments, Keighley pressure leading to an early penalty for fly half Danny McGee.

Without any quick ball, the visitors laboured manfully and managed to maul their way over the line for what looked like a try but unfortunately the referee was unable to see the grounding.

Towards the end of the game, West Leeds sealed their victory with a try from winger Jack Marshall.
