Yorkshire Division Two: Wath Upon Dearne 24 Keighley 27

HAVING been outplayed for much of the match, Keighley snatched victory with a last-minute try by winger Jack Atkinson.

The visitors started well, gaining an early penalty for Alex Brown, but from that point onwards they were poor, lacking composure and making too many basic errors.

Wath grew in confidence and camped in Keighley territory, and eventually veteran former Bees scrum half Joe Bartlett darted over to score, outside half Jack Whitlam adding the conversion.

Towards the end of the half, Whitlam turned the constant pressure into points with a well-struck drop goal.

In the second half, Keighley again struggled, and territorial pressure told when Whitlam added to his tally with a penalty.

The visitors managed to put some phases together and gain good field position, but their hard was wasted when the ball was literally given away wide out, Wath’s 17-year-old winger Adam Clark hacking the ball forwards to claim a try in the corner.

Two further penalties from Whitlam added to Keighley's woes, but, with less than 15 minutes left on the clock and 21 points adrift, they began to play some sensible open rugby, making the ball available and keeping it away from the big Wath forwards.

The visitors gained a line-out deep in opposition territory, and a take and drive gave wing-forward Shaun Minikin a well-earned try.

For the last ten minutes, Keighley were totally dominant, leading to two tries for winger Luke Carter, after some brilliant approach work by player-coach Hamish Pratt, replacement full back Olly Mitchell adding both conversions.

It looked like Keighley were going to at least gain a losing bonus point.

However, Atkinson managed to finish off some rugged forward play when he reached out to score in the corner.
