WINNING at Heath would normally be a cue for a large round of back-slapping.

However, Keighley's head coach Danny McGee was more circumspect after their 13-12 Yorkshire One victory there last Saturday.

He said: "We were pleased with the result but not the performance.

"In fact, we were very disappointed as we had to defend for far too long and we struggled in the set-pieces, and particularly the scrum, which is a bit of a worry.

"But the fact that we defended for so long in the match and won, getting four league points, shows that we must be doing something right, and it is a match that we would probably have lost two or three years ago."

McGee added: "We have a bit of a winning mentality now, whereas we didn't then, and the fact that we aren't satisfied showed that we have raised our standards.

"And that is what we will need to do on Saturday at home to Scarborough in the same way that we did a fortnight ago against Old Brodleians."

Bridlington are clear leaders with 37 points but Keighley are up to third on 27 points in a division where only five points separate second-placed Brods (30 points) from Beverley, who are seventh.

"It is fantastically competitive, and Scarborough will be tough opposition," said McGee, who also took time out to praise open-side flanker Lucas Uren and full back Alfie Seeley, who is adapting to the different code after playing rugby league with Cougars.

McGee said: "Lucas was a scrum half but we always felt like he acted as an extra forward.

"He brings energy off the bench and is capable of stealing the ball.

"We started Alfie off on the wing against Hullensians to offer him a little bit of protection and so that he could learn the game in terms of when the opposition are kicking and positional play, but he is doing really well at full back.

"He is a convert now!"
