Selby 46, Keighley 26
With only six regular first-team players available, this second-round Yorkshire Shield tie was always going to be a difficult task for Keighley.
In the end, the inexperienced side competed well from start to finish, even taking an early lead with a well-taken try by wingman Luke Carter, converted by Alex Brown, after an early penalty goal for Selby by Josh Cruise.
The home side’s strong running backs were a constant threat but were well shackled by a keen Keighley defence.
By half time, however, two tries by centre Ti Brown and one from No 8 Martin Prothero against two penalty goals by Brown had put the home side ahead.
Further home tries by Dan Porter, Alex Arthur and Charlie McCoy swept Selby into an unassailable lead, but Keighley stuck to their task.
A Brown penalty and two tries by scrum half Tom Rock, the former director of rugby at Otley, added respectability to the scoreline and credibility to a gallant Keighley performance.
