SO, the electorate has spoken.

The nation still has the same Prime Minister (just).

And Keighley welcomes a new MP.

Irrespective of politics, there is little doubt the style of Labour's John Grogan will be very different from his Tory predecessor.

But the challenges are very much the same.

Keighley has much to be proud of.

Although its manufacturing base is not what it once was, the town boasts a wealth of world-leading companies.

We have a modern college campus, some top tourist attractions, thriving sports clubs, excellent retail provision, good rail and bus links, some wonderful buildings and most importantly, honest and hard-working communities.

However, there is a downside.

Keighley faces issues – well documented through this newspaper – that have proved a stern test for many and will most likely feature high on Mr Grogan's 'to do' list.

There is the ongoing saga of East Parade's 'lunar landscape', the campaign against the planned waste-to-energy plant and the traffic turmoil which plagues the town, to name but a few.

Our new MP has certainly thrown himself enthusiastically into the role, with meetings and surgeries already organised.

His wealth of experience from his days as Selby's Parliamentary representative will stand him in good stead in the days and months ahead.

We wish him well.
