IT'S hugely disappointing that one of Keighley's longest-surviving, traditional events is not going to happen this year.

The gala is maybe not what it once was – historic photos of the 140-year-old event show massive processions, elaborate floats and throngs of cheering people lining the whole route.

But the day still holds a special place in many people's hearts, and families in particular look forward to the activities.

Plus of course it raises much-needed funds for local charities.

Organisers have declined to elaborate too much on the reasons for their decision, but the finger of blame shouldn't be pointed at anyone.

As is so often the case nowadays with events like this, most of the work falls on the shoulders of a very small band of dedicated volunteers.

And a huge amount of effort is needed, before and on the day, to ensure such extravaganzas run smoothly.

A 'replacement' event is being held by Marshalls Amusements, a long-time supporter of the gala, and let's hope that is a success.

The gala committee is planning for the full-blown event to return next year, but much of that hinges on the town's public.

If people want to see the extravaganza continue, volunteers will need to step forward.
