DANCE artist Jaivant Patel will perform at Kala Sangam with a captivating new show of classical Indian and contemporary dance. His new show Yaatra can be seen at the Bradford arts centre on Thursday May 2 at 7.30pm.

Taking its title from the Sanskrit for a journey or pilgrimage, Yaatra is a celebration of the overlap between two cultures. Blending Kathak and contemporary dance, Yaatra is rooted in Jaivant’s experiences as a gay man of different cultures.

Offering fresh perspectives on South Asian LGBTQ+ narratives, particularly those around faith and spirituality, the show explores how we can pay tribute to the traditions and heritage of one culture while living in another and uncovers the untold stories within both.

Jaivant Patel is an award-winning dance artist, choreographer and creative producer. His work focuses on the complexities surrounding British-Asian identity, particularly perceptions and stereotypes.

He said: “Kala Sangam is a brilliant location to be premiering a production that seeks to explore and ask relevant questions about important contemporary issues, coming from the fresh perspective of the South Asian LGBTQ+ community.”

Alex Croft, Creative Director of Kala Sangam, said: “Jaivant is one of the most exciting South Asian artists in the UK currently, so to be able to bring the world premiere of Yaatra to Bradford as part of our South Asia Now strand is a real privilege.

“As well as being a stunning showcase of classical and contemporary dance, the themes of this performance are going to resonate with many of our audiences - I can’t wait to see see the positive impact I’m sure it’s going to have.”
