The stage version of the original High School Musical movie was one of the best pop shows I've ever seen.

The movie sequel wasn't as good as the original, however, and the same goes for the stage adaptation.

The kids of East High spend the summer working at a country club owned by bitchy Sharpay's dad.

But Troy and Gabriella’s romance -- and their talent contest entry -- hits rocky ground thanks to Sharpay's scheming.

A large cast of all-singing all-dancing young 'uns certainly give it their all in lots of high-energy routines.

But the songs aren't strong enough, the lyrics aren't clear, and dancing and acting could be sharper.

The light-hearted scenes lack wit and invention, while serious moments -- romantic traumas and doubts about the future -- rarely ring true.

Overall the show isn't as bad as it might sound -- it is quite fun, if forgettable, and from the audience reaction on Tuesday it can be particularly enjoyed by women in their 20s.
