DOZENS of people turned out to take part in a weekend baking contest organised by the Haworth Fairtrade Group.

The Little Haworth Bake Off on Saturday (March 3) featured special guest Sandy Docherty, from Yeadon, who is a former contestant in the popular televised Great British Bake Off.

The event she attended in Haworth's West Lane Baptist Church was staged to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. Also present was Keighley MP John Grogan and Fairtrade supporter Keighley West ward councillor Adrian Farley.

Rita Verity, of Haworth Fairtrade Group, said: "We almost cancelled because of the weather, but in the end we went ahead. There was a real buzz on the day and a great atmosphere, so we made the right decision.

"Sandy was brilliant and she got involved with everything. She helped me out tremendously.

"About 50 people came along, which was very good considering the bad weather."

The occasion comprised a Bake and Bring contest, as well as an opportunity for some participants to compete in baking at the event itself. Women, men and children, including some people who had never baked previously, were among the contestants.

Among the supporters were Bradford Council, Marks & Spencer, the Co-op and Divine Chocolate.

Rita said staff from Oxenhope Co-op had a stand at the contest, while additional food was donated by Haworth Wholefoods.

She thanked Haworth firm Modo Creative, for donating laser engraving for the olive wooden spoons given out as prizes.

And a Fairtrade raffle prize of a hamper of Mary Berry baking equipment was donated by the Haworth and Bronte Gift shop.
