A HOSPITAL consultant has won recognition for his "amazing contribution" to caring for patients with endometriosis.

Stephen Porter, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, has received the Primrose Award.

The accolade, announced at the annual Primrose Ball in Silsden, is given to a health professional who has "offered understanding and empathy" and "made a positive impact on a patient's overall wellbeing and outcomes".

Mr Porter was nominated by several of his patients.

"I am very honoured to receive the award," he said.

"I provide advanced surgery for patients with endometriosis and I always endeavour to give a holistic service – not just surgery or medicine, but to be understanding of the impact the operation has on their lives."

Endometriosis is a common condition, where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found in other parts of the body.

It mainly affects girls and women of childbearing age.

The Primrose Ball is held in support of Endometriosis Awareness Week and to fundraise for Endometriosis UK.

Event organiser Michelle Middleton, from Silsden, has had endometriosis herself for 12 years and is cared for at Airedale Hospital.

She said: "It is sometimes hard finding the right support as so much still needs to be done to raise awareness of endometriosis.

"We had several people take the time to nominate Mr Porter for the care and understanding he delivers to endometriosis patients."
