KEIGHLEY College is staging an event aimed at encouraging more women to take-up engineering.

The event is being held at Gesipa, in Dalton Lane, Keighley, where there will be a tour of the factory and a range of activities promoting the opportunities available within the sector.

There will also be a question and answer session.

The April 26 venture is part of a wider project tying-in with a long-term Government initiative to promote science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) fields to women.

Heather Whitehead, for Keighley College, said: "Engineering is traditionally a male-dominated industry, but the sector – with the help of further and higher education institutes – is doing its best to address the gender imbalance.

"Supported by a partnership of Government, charity organisations and employers, we are committed to raising young women's engagement and achievement in STEM subjects and careers.

"STEM fields are at the core of the UK's innovation.

"All students, especially women, should be made aware of the options available and fully included in the equation."

The event is backed by Bradford Council chief executive, Kersten England.

She said: "We want to make sure all the district's young people have access to a wide range of high-standard qualifications that can help them progress into employment and further and higher education.

"This event is a great way of offering women learning pathways and good apprenticeship opportunities in engineering, where they have been under-represented in the past."
