KEIGHLEY nostalgia fans will be given an insight into the music scene in a northern town during the 1960s.

Halifax man Trevor Simpson will talk about “Small Town Saturday Night” when he visits Keighley Library on Saturday, July 14.

The 2pm talk in the upstairs Local Studies Library will tie-in with the library’s current exhibition about Keighley’s Musical Heritage in the 1960s.

Although Mr Simpson’s talk will focus on Halifax rather than Keighley, organisers believe it will satisfy local people because the towns had so much in common during the 1960s.

The talk will also be accompanied by display of photos and memorabilia from the 1950s and 1960s.

Keighley historian Malcolm Hanson, one of the organisers, said: “Trevor has written two books telling the story of his love affair with the local music scene in a northern town.

“Small Town Saturday Night is also the name of Trevor’s first book, which tells the story of Halifax in the 60s, and was written over a five-year period.

“The talk will feature fascinating facts of how the Halifax area was actually at the cutting edge of popular music during the world changing decade of the sixties.”

Trevor Simpson is well-known for his sporting connections – he was a referee officiating for the Football League at the highest level, appearing at Wembley FA finals, several European and International matches, and as a linesman at a World Cup Qualifier.

Malcolm said that despite this pedigree, Trevor is better known for his great love of popular music.

Malcolm said: “An Elvis Presley fanatic, Trevor possesses every version of every song sung by The King, and as a writer he has contributed articles to Goldmine, Elvis the Man and His Music, the Dusty Springfield Bulletin.

“He is a regular contributor to Essential Elvis, the Graceland approved bi-monthly magazine publication.

“No doubt for Keighley’s Elvis fans, Trevor – who counts one Priscilla Presley among his friends – will have time to answer questions about the great man too!”

Keighley’s Musical Heritage is an expanded version of Keighley Library’s 1960s music exhibition – curated by librarian Janet Mawson – that attracted hundreds of people last year.

The exhibition was recently relaunched with a concert at the library featuring the reformation of two of Keighley’s most successful 1960s groups – The Presidents and the Doveston Brothers.

Malcolm Hanson is currently working on a follow-up exhibition highlighting’s music scene during the 1970s.

Admission to Trevor Simpson’s talk is free.
