A CLUB in Steeton will be able to celebrate its centenary next year in an improved building thanks to the outcome of an extensive programme of fundraising and renovation.

Two years ago, members and supporters of Steeton Sailors & Soldiers Club began the job of raising £12,000. This was to cover the costs of fitting a new roof and heating system.

Work on the roof began on September 3 and was finished by September 18.

Club spokesman Tim Sugden said: "With the help of volunteers, sponsors, donors, and through holding various fundraising events, the improvements have been completed as of September this year.

"It's been a really magnificent effort by members and friends to raise such a large sum of money.

"Past generations looked after the club well, and this latest renovation will secure the club for many generations to come. It will also help us celebrate the centenary in style while remembering those who fought in the two world wars."

The club was formed shortly after the First World War, in 1919, to provide a social venue for ex servicemen.

Mr Sugden added: "The work on the building needed doing, because the roof was in poor condition and some water was leaking in.

"We started raising money in February 2016. We had race nights, band nights, 'buy a roof slate' and other activities."
