THE murderous campaign against Rohingya Muslim civilians by the Burmese regime was graphically explained to Keighley town councillors.

Sirajul Islam, a 17-year-old Rohingya student who was born in a refugee camp and now lives in the UK, addressed a town council meeting about the decades of persecution inflicted on his people by the Burmese Government.

This campaign of terror has led to about a million Rohingya being forced into neighbouring Bangladesh, where they are surviving in squalid, overcrowded refugee camps.

Mr Islam called on the town council to speak out in support of international efforts to prosecute those responsible for killing or forcibly expelling Rohingya people.

“An entire generation of Rohingya in Burma and Bangladesh are being wiped from the face of the earth,” he warned.

“Rohingya children are being denied education, without which they’ll have no prospects of a better life.

“I’m one of the lucky few to have escaped this inhumane treatment.”

Mr Islam’s speech was applauded by the town council, with Cllr Michael Westerman calling him a “fantastic ambassador” for the Rohingya cause.
