SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons has proved it is all heart.

The company has installed lifesaving defibrillators at every store, including the outlet in Worth Way, Keighley.

Now the firm has received a St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes award in recognition of its effort.

The £500,000 initiative – funded by the retailer's charitable arm, Morrisons Foundation – has saved at least five lives since its launch a year ago.

As part of the scheme, the firm also arranged for more than 2,300 staff to attend sessions to learn how to use defibrillators and administer CPR.

St John Ambulance has named Morrisons as winner of the Workplace Heroes category in its annual awards.

Mark Farmer, for the charity, said: "Our Everyday Heroes awards recognise those who give and champion first aid.

"This huge undertaking by Morrisons to keep people safe has already reaped the rewards of lives saved and is a most deserving winner of our Workplace Heroes accolade.

"Up to seven out of ten people who suffer a cardiac arrest could survive if they are treated with a defibrillator within the first five minutes.

"We know from our research that members of the public would like to see more of these vital devices in their neighbourhoods, so we encourage other businesses to install defibrillators as a matter of urgency."

Gary Mills, group retail director at Morrisons, said the firm was delighted to have the devices in all its stores.

He added: "We hope it's reassuring for customers, colleagues and the local community.

"We have staff trained in first aid and CPR, but a defibrillator boosts a person's chances of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest."
