THE YOUNGEST members of Sutton’s 90-year-old theatre group will benefit the most from its latest grant.

Sutton’s Green Hut Theatre Company applied for around £500 from the Craven Trust on behalf of its Youth Theatre.

The cash is aimed at supporting children aged from eight to 18 who take part in either fortnightly drama sessions or the parent group’s stage shows.

Some of the grant will buy footwear suitable for dancing, and clothes bags to be used by each child for their costumes.

The most important purchase will be portable room dividers to create separate changing areas for boys and girls during performances at Sutton Village Hall.

The group will also buy two heaters for its base in the Green Hut off Main Street in Sutton, which is used by children and adults up to four times a week for rehearsals, drama workshops, committee meetings and social events.

The remainder of the grant will pay for voice training for one of the leaders of the youth theatre.

The youth theatre, which meets every second Tuesday at the Green Hut, was set up five years ago to give young members something to do in months between the annual pantomime.

It has grown into a flourishing group that meets year-round, where youngsters learn performance skills, gain confidence and develop teamwork through improvisation and drama games.

Meanwhile on Wednesdays, a dozen of the children are rehearsing with the adult cast of this year’s family pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, for performances from December 5-8.

The Youth Theatre welcomes new members aged from eight to 16.
