ANOTHER round of funding has opened in a scheme which has helped countless Keighley-district projects since its launch.

The Safer Communities Fund, launched in 2014, has so far distributed more than £2.4 million.

Grants have been handed out to 550 projects across West Yorkshire.

Now a further £150,000 is being made available to community groups, the voluntary sector, charities and partner organisations.

The fund – set-up by West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson – is financed by money recovered from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Mr Burns-Williamson said: “At a time when many key services are suffering through continued Government austerity measures, the support for locally-based projects is ever more crucial.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for groups, partner organisations, charities and those in the voluntary sector across the area, working to keep people safe in their community in various ways.

“Now entering its 15th round, the fund has been instrumental in making a difference to people’s lives locally – which I have seen at first hand on many of my visits.

“It gives these providers the financial impetus they need to carry on their good work and to tackle the key priorities of my police and crime plan.

“When I have met with those who have received past funding, I have seen how even just the smallest amounts can play a significant part in supporting our communities.

“This latest grant round is set against any theme of my police crime plan, so I would encourage the various local groups out there to take a look and consider an application.

“We have a collective responsibility to keep our communities safe and feeling safe. By offering this further injection of cash and support, we can help achieve this together.”

West Yorkshire Police Chief Constable, Dee Collins, said the force was committed to taking money and assets from criminals and giving back to the communities which were targeted.

“By reinvesting seized assets we can support incredibly worthy groups and individuals in our communities,” she added.
