A SPECIAL tribute has been paid to Keighley railwaymen who served in the First World War.

Posters listing those who fought in the conflict are being displayed at the town's railway station.

Produced in two different styles, they will be permanently on show in the platform waiting rooms.

Behind the initiative was Graham Mitchell, chairman of the Friends of Airedale Line and team leader with the Keighley Station Partnership.

"It occurred to me that Keighley had no memorial to the local employees of the Midland and Great Northern railway companies who fought in the First World War," he said.

"I asked Andy Wade and Ian Walkden of the Men of Worth Project if they could research the relevant names, and with their assistance we have been able to design an appropriate commemorative poster.

"There are rather fewer names than I had expected – there are no drivers, firemen or guards in the listing, but these categories of railwaymen would have been essential to the war effort at home and I assume they had 'reserved occupations'."

He thanks Keighley Town Council for funding the project, and town mayor Councillor Fulzar Ahmed for launching the poster in a ceremony at the Royal British Legion poppy shop in the Airedale Shopping Centre.

"Although we realise the list of names may be incomplete I feel it is only right in this centenary year of the 1918 armistice that the hitherto forgotten railwaymen of Keighley should be brought to public attention and duly honoured," added Mr Mitchell.
