A COMPETITION for schoolchildren run by Philip Davies MP to promote integration and community cohesion attracted 400 entries.

In My British Hero, Mr Davies, Shipley Conservative MP, wanted primary and secondary school pupils to write about or draw a figure in British history they most admire and say why.

And he was very impressed with the high standard of entries.

Mr Davies said: “I am extremely grateful to the schools and pupils who entered the competition. We had an impressive number of entries and the quality was of an incredibly high standard.

“Entries ranged from the very personal to the obscure, but in every case a great deal of time, effort and research had gone into them.

“The competition was designed to promote integration and a pride in being British and the calibre of entries has encouraged me to want to run the competition again in the future.”

The subjects chosen by the winning children ranged from the likes of Princess Diana, Roald Dahl and Amelia Earhart to members of their family they admire.

More than 400 entries were sent in from across the Shipley constituency and every child who entered got a certificate signed by Mr Davies.

The judges of the competition were Nigel Burton, Editor of the T&A, Kersten England, Chief Exec of Bradford Council, Philip Davies MP, Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond in North Yorkshire and Minister for Local Government, and the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, Home Secretary.
