A PROJECT to develop dementia friendly communities was outlined to members of Oxenhope Parish Council.

Ward officer Marie Copley explained the concept to councillors at their latest monthly meeting.

“About 6,000 people are living with dementia in Bradford district, but only 55 per cent of them have been diagnosed,” she warned.

She explained that making villages, town and cities more welcoming to people who have dementia involves raising awareness about the condition and its symptoms with organisations such as businesses, healthcare and transport providers, visitor attractions, and councils.

She said once these organisations have greater understanding of what the illness involves they can take whatever steps are necessary to create a public environment which is less likely to cause distress to people with dementia.

“It’s about trying to ensure people with dementia can carry on with their lives as much as possible,” she added.

“And it’s easier for them to do so in a community which has a caring attitude.

“Oxenhope won’t become dementia friendly overnight, but it’s important to work towards that aim.”
