ENTRIES have opened for next year’s Skipton Triathlon - the largest pool-based triathlon in the country, and a favourite event for both first timers and elite athletes.

More than 800 people took part in this year’s event, which is centred at Aireville Park and was organised by Craven District Council for the first time last year.

Next year’s event is due to go ahead on April 14 and prices will remain the same, with those signing up early getting a discount.

Those taking part - either as individuals, or as part of a relay team, will carry out a 400 metre swim of the pool, followed by a 22km bike ride along the A59 to West Marton, dropping down to Thornton-in-Craven, before heading back to Broughton along the A59 towards Skipton.

The course will finish off with a 5k run in Aireville Park.

Councillor Linda Brockbank, the council’s lead member for resilient communities, said: “This is a fantastic event and each year we get amazing feedback from people who have taken part.

“From complete beginners to talented elite athletes, this race attracts a huge range of competitors. This year we even had three generations of the same family taking part in the relay event.”

She added: “We’ve been very lucky to have some great sponsors, supporters and volunteers, who help us stage this event and make it such a memorable experience.”

Next year’s event will be sponsored as this year, by RunRight and Omnis Design, who will be joined by Barnfield Construction, the council’s Joint Venture partners.

Tim Webber, of Barnfield Construction, said: “We’re proud to be supporting the popular Skipton Triathlon. We wish all the participants lots of luck for the testing challenge.”
