A CAT-neutering scheme is proving a massive success.

Keighley Cat Care and White Cross Vets in Eccleshill, Bradford, teamed-up in a bid to slash the number of unwanted kittens being born across the district.

An assisted-neutering initiative was launched a year ago to help people struggling to pay to have their pets neutered.

More than 370 male and female cats have so far had the procedure.

Keighley Cat Care arranges for pets to be neutered at White Cross Vets in return for a minimum donation of £20.

Andrew Miller, clinic director at the Eccleshill practice, said: “Neutering is the quickest and easiest way to prevent the local cat population spiralling out of control and to reduce the number of cats that are often found abandoned in all types of harrowing situations.

“Keighley Cat Care’s assisted-neutering initiative is already proving to be a huge success and there’s no doubt the high numbers of cats it is benefitting will have a positive impact across both Keighley and Bradford.”

He added: “Neutering is a procedure that we generally recommend to cat owners because it offers a wide range of benefits.

“Cats that are neutered don’t have to roam long distances looking for mates, they don’t spray as much and are less likely to fight with other cats, which can result in all types of nasty injuries.”

Chris Rawnsley, from Keighley Cat Care, pays tribute to White Cross Vets.

“Its support for this scheme is undoubtedly helping to control the local cat population by significantly reducing numbers of unwanted litters,” she said.

“In the next few weeks we’ll have helped to neuter more than 400 cats, which is an amazing achievement and has the potential to prevent thousands of unwanted kittens being born.”
